"BUNNYWITH" Invading LA.

It was a pipe dream a few months ago, but it's more official now than the 50 Shades of Grey casting. "BUNNYWITH" IS COMING TO LOS ANGELES to invade a little corner of Melrose & La Brea within the magical walls of Gallery 1988 (East) on October 19th! Bunnywith has gone through more changes than Lady Gaga over the course of 15 years since I created him, and what I'll be showing, selling and hopefully making you laugh until you choke on your gum will be the latest and greatest collection of Bunnywiths ever.

I'll trickle out some Bunnywith-related things periodically over the next few weeks but the best way to experience Bunnywith is in person, because over 100 of them at once seems to be way sillier than one of them at once. 

And maybe there will be costumes. There WILL be prints. And maybe there will be exclusives. And maybe there will be prizes. And maybe there will be ARMS (but probably not).

There are holidays we like, such as Groundhog Day, Easter, and President's Day, and then there are holidays that we LOVE, like FRIDAY the 13th! Friday the 13th's are cool because they are the only holidays that come around more than once a year, AND they sneak up on you and try to kill you.

"The World's End" Print Is Finally Here

You like movies??? Good. Then you are way ahead of the people that don't. Which means you most likely know of "Shaun of the Dead", one of the most clever and creative movies in the last decade. Which also means you know "Shaun of the Dead"s director, madman Edgar Wright? OK great, you're on a roll!
Well, being as how Edgar Wright is one of my favorite directors (in a "Trap-Jaw-Is-One-Of-My-Favorite-He-Man-Character" kind of way), and Edgar, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost are my favorite trio, I was insanely excited when Edgar invited me to see an early screening of their latest film, "The World's End". And, on top of my excitement, he almost telepathically forced uncontrollable pee to leak out of me when he then hired me create an exclusive poster for him for the movie. All Hell broke loose inside of my giddy brain and I got to work. 100 hours, 2 human manatee assistants, an old Commodore 64 computer, and 8 red bulls later, this is what emerged:

Ransom & Mitchell's "die Familie" Opening Oct 5th

For the last 6 months, the imaginative and dynamic duo of Ransom & Mitchell have been physically transforming the ZeroFriends artists into inhabitants of a surreal, whimsical and morose castle filled with hidden chambers, secret gardens, beasts,  a magical graveyard and even....a dentist office.
Though they call themselves "die Familie" (German for " the family"), are they REALLY a family? Or something....larger? 
Strung together through a series of narratives, props, and gorgeously shot portraits and prints of each artistic character, Ransom & Mitchell's "die Familie" will be moving from their 19th Century acropolis into the ZEROFRIENDS OAKLAND Gallery just in time for the upcoming  Halloween Season.

Opening OCTOBER 5th from 5-9PM at our Oakland gallery, Ransom & Mitchell will be unveiling an entire new series of "hysterical reenactments", beautifully demented portraits of artists including Skinner, Dave Correia, Alex Pardee, Chloe Rice, Robert Bowen, Jon Wayshak and Quake.

Bunnywith A Little More Information

If you're new to "BUNNYWITH", don't worry. Unless you have the intellect of Dennis Rodman, I think you'll catch on pretty easily. Just hang in there.

For being such a simple concept, I have a million over-complicated things to say about BUNNYWITH, a character and idea that I came up with almost 15 years ago while trying really hard to decipher the incoherent Jamaican accent of my Algebra teacher at Sacramento City College. But for now I'll be fairly quick. Because that origin, much like every other evolutionary step in my goofy little armless rabbit's life, felt like a joke. A long joke that might someday be worth telling, but also a joke that I pretty quickly took seriously because it was the only thing in my life at the time that made me laugh.
Well, I've managed to find other numerous ways to laugh since then, no help from Duck Dynasty, littering, OR Morgan Freeman, but nothing that has caused me to ever forget about BUNNYWITH. 

After two comic books, a short-lived web-comic, plush toys, mini-vinyl figures, a still-in-progress phone app, and a few years in between, I felt like now was the right time to introduce Bunnywith to a new environment. And a new audience: the completely accepting non-judgmental, non-pretentious....art gallery world. I think he'll be OK, though. After all, he managed to survive being the only plush toy ever on major retail shelves to come packaged with an aborted fetus. Plus, Bunnywith has been bugging me for months to be let out of his drawer (yes, he sleeps in a drawer. Not MY drawers, A drawer). 

Here's how it works for any of you wide-eyed beautiful newcomers:



Now take that concept, repeat it 100 times in slightly different (and mostly ridiculous) ways, with completely random adornments, and you have an art gallery show. Well, you don't have a normal art gallery show, you have a BUNNYWITH art gallery show. And hopefully I will see YOU there at this non-normal, silly, and possibly offensive (to weak-minded lumpy folk) art gallery show.

In 5 more days I will be opening my most prolific, ambitious, affordable, silly and IMMATURE solo art gallery show that I have attempted in my life.
This Saturday, October 19th, at 7PM, my "BUNNYWITH" show will open up at Gallery 1988:East in Los Angeles, where, in short, alongside some new paintings, toys and masks, I will be simultaneously releasing over 100 brand new "Bunnywith" prints (produced by ZEROFRIENDS), most of which will be only $10 EACH. And that's not even including a ton of free things that I'll be giving away for no other reason than because I appreciate you coming out to an art gallery on a Saturday night when you can CLEARLY instead go to the Disco or to the Drive-In to make out with people or girls.

I jumped in my friend Marty's delorian and went a week into the future, after the Bunnywith show opened, and collected the most frequently asked questions from everyone who showed up, and I'm glad I did because it turns out there was a lot of information about the show that I almost wasn't going to mention. So here is my future-derived FAQ's for the "BUNNWITH" Art Show this Saturday, Oct 19th, at Gallery 1988: East:

Q: What is "Bunnywith" all about? 
A: Bunnywith is about 3 feet tall.

Q: No, I mean what is the CONCEPT of "Bunnywith" about. Like, what IS it?
A: "Bunnywith" is simple. It's a Bunny…WITH something else. Like Bunnywith Hat. Or Bunnywith Herpes. Or Bunnywith A Fanny Pack made out of human skin. Each painting and print is a different "Bunnywith".




Q: Is his name actually Bunnywith? Or just Bunny?
A: Bunnywith

Q: He has no arms!? WTF?
A: Well, you have no dick, but I don't find it necessary to point that out in every photo of yourself that you put up on Instagram because I'm nice.

Q: Bunnywith sounds sensitive.
A: ...

Q: Where/when will the show be?
A: The opening reception is OCTOBER 19th (Saturday) at 7PM.

The show will be on view at the gallery until mid November.

Q: What is the cost of admission?
A: FREE. 

Q: Will there be art for sale?
A: YES! There will only be a few larger new original acrylic paintings, but there will be OVER 100 new Bunnywith prints to choose from, in addition to some limited Bunnywith toys from RETROBAND, and even new high-end Halloween masks from Atomic Vomit.

Q: Are the prints limited?
A: No and Yes. ALL but ONE of the prints are non-limited prints, however, I can only bring so many to the opening. So there will be a limited amount of each print available for purchase at the opening. There will be ONE signed limited print being released too.

Q: If you sell out of a print at the opening, can I still get one?
A: Yes, Gallery 1988 will be re-stocking most of the prints throughout the duration of the show, and they will be selling the prints online during the show as well. 

Q: Can you show me some examples of the prints because I hate surprises?
A: Sure...here you go, party pooper.
Q: Don't you mean, "Pardee Pooper"? 
A: No, that would be my butt, and you're a dummy. Meanwhile...



Q: Will the Bunnywith prints be available anywhere else aside from Gallery 1988?
A: At this point, NO. Perhaps far down the road, but until further notice, NO. The ONLY way to get these prints at this time will be either in person at the gallery or online at http://nineteeneightyeight.com from Oct 21-November 15th. 

Q: How much are you selling the prints?
A: Most of the prints will be priced at $10 each, unframed and unsigned. Some larger ones will be a bit more, but the idea is to make the prints affordable enough so that everyone can go home with one!
There will be ONE framed, matted and signed version of each print that will cost a little more too.

Q: Will you be there to sign the prints if we buy them, since they are unsigned?
A: Yes, I will be there the entire night, so please don't hesitate to ask me to sign anything or just say hi. 

Q: How do I know what you look like?
A: I will be wearing giant bunny ears and most likely a non-matching beard. Like a lazy version of a Furrie.

Q: Speaking of, can I dress up? You mentioned a "Bunny Costume Contest"?
A: YES!!! Please, I encourage dressing up. It's so close to Halloween! Why not?! Though you don't HAVE to dress up like a bunny, the contest will be a "Bunny Costume Contest" so I will be awarding my favorite Bunny costume with a prize. And there will be runner-up prizes as well that I will announce throughout the week.

Q: Does it have to be a "Bunnywith" Costume?
A: Nope, just any kind of BUNNY costume. Be creative. It doesn't have to be an expensive store-bought costume. I just want to smile. My smile will be the judge.



Q: What will the main prize for the contest be?
A: A framed original "Bunnywith" piece from me. I will also be giving away some runner up prizes that I will announce via my TWITTER or INSTAGRAM @alexpardee throughout the week.

Q: What else will be going on at the show? What else will be for sale? Why should I go? I'm tired. I want to eat pizza. Saturday night is the same night that I was going to see Machete Kills. Why should I go to your show?
A: Actually, maybe you shouldn't. BUT, if you keep up with my Twitter or Instagram @alexpardee , I will be sharing a few more incentives to go, but seriously, there will be so much silly art for sale for cheap that it would be really cool if you came and hung out and chuckled with mature kids and immature adults, even if you just want to stare and wonder why there are no arms on Bunnywith.

"WILLOW CREEK" Limited Print On Sale NOW!

A few months ago, I got a wonderful present from one of the most intelligent maniacs alive today, Bobcat Goldthwait. That present was "complete creative freedom" to design whatever I wanted for the poster to his latest horror movie, "WILLOW CREEK", which has been making a bigger-than-creek-like splash at every film festival this year. The film is centered around a couple who venture up into Willow Creek, CA, where the very first Bigfoot footage was recorded, in hopes of seeing the sasquatch themselves, even though their views on the subject are conflicting. The film moves quickly from hilarious into harrowing as they descend deeper into both the town, the legend, and the forest.  After watching the film, it was clear to see that the entire Bigfoot mythology and iconography is based off of 3 ingredients: The witnesses, the stories they tell, and the dense forest. 
So i took all 3 of those main ingredients and designed this poster, which I am happy to announce will finally be available to purchase as a limited edition print through ZEROFRIENDS starting NOW!

The Console Wars means FREE PRINTS!

In the late 80's, the Sega Genesis promised to do what "NindenDIDN't", and then fizzled into the ether after a decade-long battle, momentarily calming the vast Pixel Sea that Nintendo had claimed. Soon after, Sony emerged with a confident threat that "we weren't ready", and they were right. While Nintendo continued to make children happy with mustachioed men, ocarinas and silly cart racing, Sony's Playstation kept the adult consumers' soup warm and tasty until one day Microsoft decided to enter the ring and shit in everyone's soup bowls. 



Then, it was back and forth, and back and forth until everyone seemed to be on the same playing field, playing the same games, holding hands online, no longer alienating their friends for only having "the shitty old first generation Xbox360" or for choosing to play GTA 5 on PS3 because those controls make it easier to cheat. All was calm, even if everyone online just rage-quits or tells each other to fuck themselves and eat bags of dicks for unfair level boosting, then laughs about it in the morning.
However, starting today, November 15, 2013, THE GREAT CONSOLE WARS have begun again. 
First up to strike is the new-favored Playstation 4, unleashing its early offense until next week when XBOX-One tries heartily to take back it's crown that it once had in the early 360 days. Then, only time will tell who is prettier, who can punch harder, and who has a better strategy for taking all of our money.




And even before either of these titans goes head to head over this holiday season, everyone already has a favorite.

WE ARE THE ESCAPE ARTISTS



I can’t remember the last time I had to physically run away from a situation. But there has been THOUSANDS of times that I have simply wanted to escape.

When I was asked by JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE to curate another issue, I wanted to do something different than the “Halloween” theme of last year. With the Halloween-theme, I featured artists that I have loved for years and that have influenced me visually and technically. This year I wanted to feature artists that have influenced my imagination, in some cases even since I was a child, in more ways than their visual techniques. After discussing this with Evan Pricco, the Editor In Chief of Juxtapoz over lunch, the theme of “imagination” pretty much birthed itself right there in a bowl of noodles.

The theme of “imagination” gave me a great launching point for curating this issue of JUXTAPOZ. And understanding the fact that the term “imagination” can be so broad, especially when applied to the world of art, I knew immediately which direction I wanted to go in and what specific faction of “imagination” I intended to focus on. At first, I was convinced the common thread between all of the artists I wanted to feature was that each one has created some kind of imaginary “world” with their art. But over this 3-month journey of assembling the issue, interviewing these artists, exploring the worlds that they have created, the stories written within those worlds, and discovering just WHY these artists have admirably built these universes without any promise of success or recognition, I realized that in addition to a passion for imagination, we all had something ELSE in common: a desire to escape.

Every artist and creator that I've gathered for this issue, despite any roadblocks, social opposition, competition or conformity, has spent a lifetime utilizing their imaginations, forging their own extravagant worlds to inhabit for when they wanted to escape reality. And when their worlds got large enough, these creators shared them with the rest of us, in turn giving US more places to escape to both as viewers and fellow creators. I have ventured in to each one of these artists’ extraordinary worlds consistently throughout my life and have continued to feed off of them while spending a lifetime building MY world that I hope to continue sharing forever.

Frank "Snake Eyes" Carroll

Frank Carroll's biggest fear was dying alone in war like his father had in The Battle of the Bulge. In 1970, when he was 24 years old, Frank attempted to move from Detroit into Canada in order to dodge the Vietnam War draft and instead pursue his dreams of becoming a writer. Days before moving, Frank's girlfriend, Lorna revealed that she was pregnant and asked Frank to stay in America, accept enrollment in the Army, fight in the war and return home with a new career and a bright future. Frank was raised fatherless, and didn't want his own child to share that experience. If he moved to Canada, he would live, but he would have abandoned his child. If he enrolled in the Army, he could possibly die, but he had the opportunity to fight and return home.Terrified but dedicated to his new future, and in love with Lorna, he agreed and accepted his enrollment in the Army.
9 weeks later, he arrived in Saigon as part of the 52nd Infantry and was dumped in the middle of the jungle with his unit. Because of his initial hesitance to kill and obvious fear, he was extensively bullied by his fellow soldiers, often leading Frank to spend entire nights alone, sleeping up in the trees, taking the job of lookout just to be separated from those who bullied him. At night, in the trees, though his attention never wavered from his lookout duty, he would spend hours writing letters to his girlfriend and future child, sharing fantasies about their bright futures. Eventually Frank did make one friend in the jungle, a war journalist and bomb-specialist named Peter who Frank had admired for his fearlessness with his camera and his ability to defuse anything explosive, which had already saved their unit a few times. After weeks stationed in the same small camp, Peter convinced Frank to separate from his unit and be Peter's lookout and protection while he goes and investigates a secret tribal village that was rumored to be a refuge for Vietnamese mystics and supposed witchdoctors. Peter told Frank that if he helped locate this secret village and keep them safe, they could both take credit for the groundbreaking article that Peter would write, helping Frank launch a career in journalism.
They left hours later in the cover of the night.
Frank led them through the jungle, hacking and slashing through trees, stealthily avoiding the Viet Cong, clearing the path of snakes and spiders, all while Peter shot photos and shared information that he had heard about this secret village they were trying to find, escalating his fantasies of sharing the Pulitzer Prize.
Exhausted, fevered, and starving, they found it. On the surface, this "secret" village resembled a leper colony, with many of the helpless villagers suffering from obvious deformities and ailments, too weak to even oppose Peter and Frank's intrusion. Peter suggested that they leave, fearful of catching an illness and disappointed that the rumors weren't true. But Frank noticed a subtle glow emitting from behind one of the trees and insisted they check it out before leaving. Behind the trees was a makeshift grass hut marked with a symbol that looked like 2 serpents. Inside it, they found the secrets they were looking for. Unlike anything they had ever witnessed, they stumbled in on a group of deformed, decadently robed elderly men and women, chanting amongst a bright green smoke and dancing around a skeleton. And the skeleton…was alive. Peter's camera already in hand he managed to snap about 6 shots before they were noticed, and when they were, each one of these infected mystical tribespeople turned and screeched, their eyes glowing and their teeth gnarling. As the mystics held their hands up toward Peter and Frank, the living skeleton turned its head and looked directly at them as they fled.
Darting out of the village as quickly and as carelessly as they could, Peter slammed his shin against a rogue branch and got his entire leg stuck, stopping him from moving forward. Closely behind them, the trees began to glow green, and the screeching from the mystics could be heard in the distance. Hastily, Frank hacked at the branch with his machete until Peter's leg was finally freed just as they saw the mystics enter into their eyesight. Hobbled, Peter put his arm around Frank as Frank dragged them both as quickly as he could. The mystics not far behind, Frank knew the only way to hide was up in the trees, as he had spent nights there escaping his daily bullying. Mustering his adrenaline, Frank helped Peter up into a tree, and Frank followed, where they covered themselves in thick leaves and branches. There, they sat motionless as they watched the entire village of mystics and lepers pass beneath them. Hours passed as they sat in the trees. When they both felt they were finally safe, they descended from the tree and let out a large sigh of relief.
"We're going to be famous, Frank! These shots I got! What we saw!? Those…people?! I can't wait to write about it." Peter said, excitedly.
"Let's just get home," Frank replied.
2 steps into their journey, however, Frank's future fame instantly vanished. At the base of the tree they have been holding onto for dear life, Frank heard a click as his foot pressed into the mud, and he knew what had happened. He had stepped on a mine. Frank looked at the ground. Peter looked at Frank. Frank looked up and back at Peter and asked "Peter…can you help me? Can you do anything? Can you defuse this?"
Peter looked at Frank with a subtle hint of guilt for only seconds before he held up the camera and pointed to it as he said "I can, Frank, but…I'm going to be famous."
And just like that, Peter hobbled away into the jungle as Frank stood there, watching Peter abandon him, knowing that at any moment, Frank would face his biggest fear. He would die alone in the jungle. Tears in his eyes, and a body filled with regret and anger, he pulled out a pen and a piece of paper and began writing a letter to Lorna and his baby. He got as far as "I love y-" when the mine exploded, disintegrating most of Frank's torso and the top half of his head. Frank laid in the middle of the jungle in Saigon, alone, and dead.
For days, Frank's body lay still in the jungle, his love letter faded and nearly evaporated from the moisture of the jungle, his body affected the same way. Withered, dampened, and torn apart, praying mantises and ants had already begun taking shelter in his torso. It was at this state that a cloaked figure appeared amongst the brush. Surrounding the figure was a familiar green smoky aura. Hunched over Frank's lifeless corpse, the stranger opened a bag, removed a dead pig from it, and crudely removed the pig's intestines and eyeballs, discarding the other remains. The intestines were cut into two long pieces and stretched out on the wet ground. The eyeballs were shoved into the ends of the guts, and the stranger began to chant.
Smoke filled the forest, monkeys and other wildlife could be heard screeching in the distance, bright green lights emitted from the stranger's hands and reflected off of the condensation on the jungle leaves, resembling some kind of distorted third world disco.
More chanting. More rumbling. The pig intestines changed color, began to move, and then slithered their way around Frank's exposed dead arms, making their way to his hands. Simultaneously, Frank's muscles twitched, starting with his legs, and moving up to the half of his head that was still intact. His body began to stand, and soon it was fully upright. The stranger, still cloaked, stood back and watched as the intestinal serpents wrapped themselves around Frank's hands, moved their heads in place above Frank's severed nasal cavity, and seemed to mentally link with Frank's newly reanimated body. With the serpents' functioning eyes now floating above Frank's head, a brand new complete face was formed. At this moment, Frank's mouth peeled open and he let out a bellowing scream, which quickly changed into a subtle and confident smirk.
Frank was alive….
